The Argan tree grows wild in semi-desert soil and its deep root system acts as the last barrier against the northern advance of the Sahara desert. Tragically, in the past 40 years, about one third of this 1.5 million year old forest has disappeared and in 1998, UNESCO declared it an international biosphere reserve.
As world demand grows for Argan Oil, the women's co-operatives are planting more and more Argan Trees, which benefits not only the environment, but also the 90% of the local population who depend on it for their livelihood.
